Ski in Greece!

saboneteira, originally uploaded by Jerry7171.
This is already the 3rd day of our travel! Thursday (day 1) we took the plane to Athens, by Brussels Airlines, it was a nice flight, almost 3 hours. We chatted a bit with the crew in the plane, and asked them in which hotel they usually stay when stopping in Athens, but they regretted that there are no stay-overs anymore: whoever flies to a direction, works on the returnflight. Seems that the good times of the trollydollies are over ...

Since our friend ATHENSBOY informed us in advance about the best way to go to the hotel, we took bus X95 (X = Xpressbus, don't get bad ideas), and for 3.20 euro per head (in X-busses you can pay the ticket at the driver) that bus took us almost immediately to a busstop 2 steps from the hotel: convenient !!! Check-in went smoothly, and the room in this new high-tec hotel is plain nice.
That night was windy & cold, so we stayed in, except for a bite: the complimentary hotel shuttle brought us to the airport, and we explored the food court there.
ATHENSBOY was married, no kids, friendly divorced, is now 37 y.o., single, looking for a 55+ partner. Totally in the closet due to job & hobby considerations. And an incredibly charming guy, intelligent and funny. He asked not to publish his pictures on internet, so you won't see him :)

Friday (day 2), HL wanted to perform his traditional ritual at the local Hard Rock Café, and he bought a nice Tshirt and a new pin. After that, we strolled in the old area below the Acropolis: Plaka. Small streets, tourist shops, always something special to see and have a pleasant time. Close to the Cathedral in Plaka, there is a pedestrian street with lots of religious shops, where all the Greek Orthodox clerics come and buy their jewels and fancy dresses, really worth a visit (ATHENSBOY informed us that the Greek Orthodox Church is against gay rights for the masses, because most of its clerics are gay, and they don't want to loose their sacred positions). In many of the small sideshops we admired painters recreating old masterpieces on linnen or paper. Impressive!
In the afternoon, ATHENSBOY invited us for dinner. He came to our hotel, so that we could have a first impression of each other in the privacy of our room, then we took bus X92 to Kifissia, a bit higher on the mountains, where the Athens elite stays, much cooler in summer. All the nice brands are there too: they go where the money is! ATHENSBOY treated us in a local greek restaurant, really fantastic food, the best greek meal I have eaten in my entire life: perfectly prepared, lovely presented, it's absolutely worth a visit! We came back late.

Saturday (day 3), HL wanted to visit Kifissia again, so we took the same bus and strolled there. Really nice. Then ATHENSBOY phoned us: "care for a coffee at the sea? Take bus 550 and I'll wait for you at the endstation". So we did, although we didn't know that we had to buy bustickets in one of the many kiosks, but the driver didn't mind: just go in, he nodded! That was a free ride hehe!
The seaside of Athens is worth a stroll: so close to the centre and so fresh and lovely! We were at Flisvos Marina (Faliro), where all the milliondollarboats are on display. First we had a cappucino, then a walk along the coast, we saw a swimmer (at this time of the year! it's still winter!) and we went for a salad at Goodie's, the Greek variaton of McDonalds (ATHENSBOY said that it's much better because it uses Greek meat), and then ATHENSBOY brought us to the tramstation: we bought tickets at the machine (1 euro per head); the tram comfortabely delivered us to Syntagma Square (where the hotel Grande Bretagne is); from there we took the X95 bus back to the hotel. All this hopping around in Athens made us feel like old-time-visitors to the city, although we do realise that we couldn't have done it without the lovely instructions by ATHENSBOY ... nevertheless, when we come back in April, we do plan to use public transport again, especially the tram, that is quite comfy and convenient. In April, we'll also have to see the Temple of Olympian Zeus, near Vass. Olgas: from there you have a beautiful view on the Acropolis, with the few remains of the Zeus temple in the foreground! Excellent spot for pictures. It's only a small walk from Syntagma Square.

Back in the hotel, HL went for a swim, me for a sauna. After my sauna, when I was showering, a grayhaired slim guy my age came in, inviting me to join him for another sauna round. His mind was clearly set on something else then just sauna, and I kindly thanked him for his offer. He should go for the original greek sausage!

When it comes to smoking, Greece is extremely smokersfriendly: the only limits are public buildings (post, government, ...) and transport (busses, trams,...); everywhere else, smoking is allowed, included bars & restaurants, even in the airport. And a pack of Dunhill costs 3.20 euro (Belgium: 5.20). Any government that would try to limit smoking, will fear for its reelection! Greeks love their freedom in many forms.

Tomorrow will be the departure for BKK. We'll leave the hotel around noon, and we hope to arrive in BKK in the morning, the next day. And then the real trip can take off!

And now the question of the day: what's this title about ski in Greece?
Well, because from our hotelroom, we could see the snowcovered mountains surrounding Athens and we've been told that it's an excellent place for skiing. So the title is about something we haven't done and only know by word of mouth ... the story of our life hehehe!

the sleep B4 departure!

breathe, originally uploaded by XxJu-JuxX.

First time ever!!! Normally the day B4 departure is hectic and packed with things to do ... and now, still being sick, I stayed in bed half of the day hehe!!! HL told me that this was the best way to prepare for the travel, and I agreed :-)

Tomorrow we'll wake up early, 5 am, we'll take the train at 7 am and we should be in the airport at 8 am ... and then around noon already in Greece!!

Provided that the flight is safe, though .... today, a plane by Turkish Airlines crashed at Schiphol, 9 people died, many were injured. Sad, very sad, but it won't keep us from flying :-)

drousy hugs,

PB

dripping nose and other runaways!

Sniffle, originally uploaded by bcostin.

feeling a bit better today .... although ... the coughing is not so bad anymore, but now my nose started to drip hahaha .... I just imagine it's a creative way of having precum :-)

I had a meeting with the French speaking department of my publisher (Wolters Kluwer) today, quite nice, they were really doing their best in speaking Dutch, and I almost always could understand what they were saying :-) No concrete new plans though, I had the impression that they just wanted to meet and nothing more. Which is fine by me!

The file for Hong Kong was sent by email today, now I'm waiting for the reply of the lawyer there. If all goes well, we'll have some serious analysis to do once we're in Hong Kong!

My sister wrote me today, asking why I will be away for such a long time ... she's afraid that something might happen to my mother, and obviously she feels lost without me. I told here that I can help her by email, if necessary. Question remains: should we interrupt our travel in case the health situation of my mother would deteriorate? I really haven't thought that through .... Anyway, we don't know if that situation will happen now.

Those were the highlights of the day !!! oh yes, my doctor gave me a note for the airline control: I need to clear my sinusses before take-off and landing, and I need a prescription to bring the bottle with medication on board hahaha!!! I wonder if they will suspect me being a terrorist :-) To be continued !!!!!!!!

(!boom!)

a bit sick!

275 | Exam, originally uploaded by The Doctr.

ah ah ah, winter finally got me !!! I'm coughing, headache, slight fever ... no blog tonight, I'll be heading for my mattress and that's it for today :-) I'll see the medical docter tomorrow, although I hope it's nothing serious!

Sunday is Football!!! a gracious one for the night :-)

A Sunday Haircut

It's Sunday, and that means: Hair Day !! Since we bought a hair product in KL that needs to be applied once a week (totally herbal and it smells heavenly !!!) we decided to do hair treatment on Sundays :-)

So today HL has cut my hair! Which means that for the upcoming trip you won't see pictures of me with a hairdresser :-) but I'm sure that HL will hunt for local hairdressers, whereever in Asia we'll be, it's a tradition by now :-)

Further news as the Sunday unfolds!

-oOo-

(afternoon) and here I am again! nothing special to report for the afternoon: busy the whole time with laundry & cleaning :-) what a way to spend the Sunday hehe!!! But I want everything to be done before we leave :-)

-oOo-

(evening) my friend from India (hi R. !) worked in a callcentre in India ... customers with computerproblems in the USA and UK could call a helpline (they didn't know that the guy who was helping them, was located in India) and he confirmed me, that the callers from UK were horrible, rude, and impossible to deal with. So far for the good ol' England hehe!

counting down!!!

Christmas Balls, originally uploaded by binni_joy.

Again almost midnight hehe! Seems I don't get in bed in time :-)

Well, nothing special to tell tonight. I woke up early, as usual, and wrote some very interesting bills (let the money roll in !!!) ... I really should write bills faster, since the files I worked on this morning were last billed in 2005 ... and it's not good to bill the client now thousands and thousands of euros ... Well, the client won't mind, I hope :-)

This afternoon, we went shopping for office supplies & groceries, in Makro & Office centre. And after that, I was too lazy to continue to work in the office so I decided to amuse myself on internet and watch some TV. I'm getting lazy, folks !!!

Since the car battery gave problems after our last trip (more then 2 months), I bought a "drip-charger", so that the car-battery will be slowly charged while we're away on the next trip. We do want our car to be fully functional when we return :-)

There is more to tell though, but it's a bit premature. My brother R. asked if it would be possible to rent the "big" house once we moved in to the "small" house. As you know, we now live in the "big" house, where the office is at ground level, and the private quarters are on the higher levels. The renovation on the adjacent "small" house should be ready this year. I don't know how much longer I will keep the office in the "big" house, but I told my brother that we could proceed on thinking in his direction :-) And don't forget that the "small" house, once we moved in, will have a special guestroom + guestbathroom, so if you feel like visiting us, your place will be ready :-)

and now it's time to grab some dreams !!!!!!!!! Muah :-)

understanding of iran today ....

in a while, it will be midnight!!! but I wanted to post this short bloggie, since I got invited to visit an upcoming exhibition in the British Museum about Iran:

http://www.britishmuseum.org/whats_on/future_exhibitions/shah_abbas.aspx

As you may have noticed, I think that Iran will play a major role in the near future. So everything about that country intrests me. At the same time, I have dear chatfriends in Iran (Tehran, Esfahan), and my heart is connected with them.

Iran regurarely comes in the news, not at least for killing gays. It's horrible, it's a crying out loud shame that barbarism like that still happens today.

The exhibition in the BM is about an ancient ruler in Iran, who was considered "ruthless". As are the Iranian rulers today. The ancient ruler was also known to favor the arts and architecture. How can one combine love for beauty with ruthlesness?

I try to understand the roots of human nature, but believe me, sometimes it's very very impossible.

Friday Night and This Is England!

Sunny Boy, originally uploaded by Osvaldo_Zoom.
It's Friday night !!!! The week is almost over, the travel is coming closer :-)
Today, I managed to download a movie that I like to see: this is England.
If you know me well, you know that I don't really fancy the UK, nor Ireland. It's a strange place, and I find the people there not pleasant nor welcoming nor service-orientated. All is very mediocre there, and I hate mediocrity !!!
I'll watch the movie tonight .... or tomorrow :-)
The one who posted that movie said in his email that the movie precisely explains why that poster moved away from UK :-) so for me it's a must-see because it will tell me that I'm right in my opinion about UK hahahaha !!!! Don't we all want to be right in what we think?
So, if you come over now, you'll see me sitting in my lazy chair, enjoying the vid on the computerscreen! Like a lazy daddy but no cigar :-)

hotel l'hospital

Bhangra Boys, originally uploaded by Captain Suresh.
During my fight against time, in the office, I suddenly got a phone call from F., the husband of my sister L.
F. is a nice guy, he's a professor in economics at the Ghent University! Good brains :-) So he called on behalf of my sister (who was at work, and couldn't call): mother is in the hospital! The medical doctor decided that she suffered from dehydration, and that she needed some days of attention in a medical environment.
Isn't Belgium a great place to be? Just a phonecall to the hospital, and your bed is ready and set 4 u in hotel l'hospital.
So, as soon as I could leave the office, I jumped in the car, drove to the hospital, and checked on my mother. She was quite allright, enjoying all the attention of the nurses, and feeling secure and pampered.
Since the nurses wear some kind of white headcover, I picked the above picture, to imagine how male nurses should be dressed hehe! Mmmmm .... that would be a hospital I'd gladly visit !!!!!!!
hospitality hugs,

to be busy or not to be busy, that's the question!

lonely boy, originally uploaded by VelhoJR.
hello hello! Here I am again with my daily update!
Woke up early this morning, and worked almost 12 hours .... what an amount of work that was done today!! So nice, once it's finished hehe!
That's why I choose the picture for todays blog: the little boy is doing nothing, enjoying sitting at his door and waiting for life to pass by. Over here, it's quite the opposite !!!
And inbetween the office work, I managed to invite my brothers & sister & their partner & kids for my birthdayparty on the 1st of May !!! I asked them where they wanted the party to be, and they said: in Budapest, Hungary! So HL booked a plane and a hotel, and I'll ship them all off for a weekend there :-) More about that in a later blog, of course!
Tomorrow we'll have a discussion with clients, to see how the court case in Hong Kong will be dealt with ... also very exciting!
And now, I'll be like the little boy in the picture, just sitting down and  watching the (internet)life go by :-) too bad it's too cold, I cannot sit outdoors :-) only in front of my window to the world: the computerscreen!
That's it for today, folks!
Be good :-)

Valentears

couple with sunflowers, originally uploaded by - Raphael Perez.
my oh my ... we had a visitor at noon. The doorbel rang, and M. asked if she could come in ... M is a female friend, we know her since she was born :-) and whenever she has a dip or a problem or when she just needs a shoulder to cry on, there she is !!! Today with a heartbreaking story ... she and her lover had a huge fight last Sunday, on Valentine!!! And her lover refuses to answer her calls. She looked devastated!
What a day to break up with each other !!!! I wonder how many couples use that day to really split up, to stop the relationship, to go different ways .... I don't doubt that there are many.  Pushed into the commercial harnass of obligatory love, one must be so tempted to ask himself if that love is true and real ... and so many times the answer must be negative.
So, although I feel really sorry for M., and I tried to give her my comforting shoulder and some complimentary good ideas how to solve her problem, I have to review my opinion on Valentine's day. I thought it was a boring invention of big business, and nothing more. Now, thanks to M., I realise that many can find a deeper meaning of Valentine: it's the day that one asks oneself: do I love you enough to stay with you for another year?
Lovely invention, those calenderdays !!!!

We won! a weekend in Center Parks :-)

Ah, we're back! HL participated in a contest, and he won a weekend half board in one of those Aqua & Spa places, in this case: Center Parks! We jumped in the car, drove 150 km, and suddenly we were partly in the tropics again .... huge greenhouses with large swimming pools, watertoys, wild rivers, huge waves .... just imagine something and it was there ... included the gorgeous guys in tiny swimwear :-)
So, that explains my silence for a few days, I was not home and over there we didn't have internet!
So far so good, now we can focus on our departure to Greece, the 26th. Ten days of hard work, and then the lovely travel and the good life can start again :-)
I'm so much looking forward to that next trip .... Thailand, Hong Kong, Macau, the Philippines .... I just feel sad that we won't have time to visit Penang & Lee again, but that will be for later this year!

Property of time

Gay Pride, originally uploaded by Guy Verville.
Woohoo!!! I worked so nicely today! A full program, and all went smoothly.
First a visit to the dentist, he is doing a major job in my mouth, trying to keep all under control, and what is uncontrolable, replace it by something that gives less problems :-) Then to the court house, hand in some papers and doing some research in the library. Then back to the office, and working on the incoming mails and outgoing paperwork! I finished the editing of the judicial magazine of which I'm the editor-in-chief, and I finished the proofreading of my latest book .... and now it's 18.30 h. and I'm sitting quietly and relaxed, writing this blog :-)
You know, sometimes we say "I have time", as if we own it !!! Which is not true, of course, we are the slaves of time, not the masters. But a clever slave can be more convenient than a stupid master hahaha!!! So, although time is not owned by me, I did use it well :-)
And while I'm typing here, a quick word on the pictures I'm posting here. They are not my property (unless you see that it's uploaded by PaulBavo, of course!) ... I find them on internet, and I only use pictures that are in public domain: the author expressed his agreement that the pictures can be used by others, without paying royalties. Very nice, this system, and I have placed my pictures on flickr.com and picasaweb.google.com also in the public domain, so that others can use them too, although not for commercial purposes! So if one day you see one of my pix popping up in another site, by another internetuser, don't be angry or disturbed: it's all about sharing!
Let me now share a tender kiss with you :-*
huggies,

too bad, I don't have a picture from this famous Mozart composition, nude guy included :-) so you'll have to do with this french one!
Just popping in to tell you that it's 23.40 h. and finally I stopped working :-)
I know, I know, I should stop sooner then this, but that's how life goes!
Please excuse me that I don't write anything else in this blog, although there is a lot to tell you !!! We had the Fortis meeting today, and financial history will have to be rewritten after this one ... but I'm too tired to write about finances and political games hehe!
More tomorrow, if all goes wel!!

General CrisisMotors

I know, I know, you're staring at the guy in front, but this is not what the today blog is about !!!! It's about the car behind him hahaha!
My car needed a small maintenance, and I drove it to the workplace, you know, change oil and other sticky stuff :-) While waiting for the lubricant-job to be done, I chatted with the salesperson that sold me my actual car. About General Motors, and about the crisis. We read about it in the newspaper but he can give first-hand-information!
Well, he confirmed that it was crisis indeed. This year he has not sold one single new car. And the stuff he told me how GM is beautifying its statistics is not to be published here .... nor the fact that the firm is pushing it's employees to buy a new car at less then half of the price!
My oh my, and I fear that the real crisis still has to come ... then it will be: buy one car, get one for free. Anything to get rid of the stock! And meanwhile, new models are rolling in, all with engines that consume too much, and pollute too wildly.
Anyway, he asked me about my predictions for the crisis, and here's what I told him:
* the real crisis will start once the firms massively stop paying their debts, and the banks cannot get their money back;
* prediction: in around 6 months from now,
* the crisis-situation will probably be spiced up by a war-situation, most probable with Iran,
* and those who own real estate will be happy to have something to hold on to.
Let's see what the future brings!
And now you can look back to the guy in front of the car :-)

the proofprint arrived!

Taj Mahal Singing Boy, originally uploaded by JungleJuz.
I wish that the proofprint were delivered by this singing boy, with his empty basket hehe! but it was by regular mail. Almost 500 pages, the coming days I'll be busy proofreading !
When it comes to traffic congestion in Belgium, I had my fair share this morning: I had a case in Antwerp, at 9 a.m., and I wanted to go by car (train from Gent to Antwerp is really not pleasant). I had to leave at 7.30 a.m., for a trip that normally takes a good half an hour, and I arrived 90 minutes later .... it took me more then double the time. Monday morning jam is horrible in Belgium !!!
That being said, let's start proofreading !!!!!!!

Saturday-evening & the disadvantages of travelling!

Jeremy & Chris, originally uploaded by felix_deon.
For those of you who look with envy to our travelling: do know that, while I'm here, I'm working like a slave!!! E.g., this month I have to do the work of not only this month, but I also have to prepare the coming months, so that there are no calamities in the office while I'm away! It's hard work, my dear !!! But I do it with a smile, since the reward is coming closer each day :-)
Today I worked till 7 p.m. ... and at the end I was really pushing myself, fortunately there was strong coffee to  keep me going.
Tomorrow, Sunday, will also be working from early morning. Afternoon will be reserved for a visit to my mother, as you already know!

Continuing on the yesterday comments: Kahlil Gibran on Love

Portrait Of Jaimie, originally uploaded by felix_deon.

Hi guys! I was so touched by some of your comments yesterday. Lovely.

It made me search for the text that Kahlil Gibran ("The Profet") wrote on the subject of love ... here it goes! Enjoy it !!

----------------------------

Kahlil Gibran on Love

When love beckons to you, follow him,
Though his ways are hard and steep.
And when his wings enfold you yield to him,
Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.
And when he speaks to you believe in him,
Though his voice may shatter your dreams
as the north wind lays waste the garden.

For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning.
Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun,
So shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.

Like sheaves of corn he gathers you unto himself.
He threshes you to make you naked.
He sifts you to free you from your husks.
He grinds you to whiteness.
He kneads you until you are pliant;
And then he assigns you to his sacred fire, that you may become sacred bread for God's sacred feast.

All these things shall love do unto you that you may know the secrets of your heart, and in that knowledge become a fragment of Life's heart.

But if in your fear you would seek only love's peace and love's pleasure,
Then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love's threshing-floor,
Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears.
Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself.
Love possesses not nor would it be possessed;
For love is sufficient unto love.

When you love you should not say, "God is in my heart," but rather, "I am in the heart of God."
And think not you can direct the course of love, for love, if it finds you worthy, directs your course.

Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself.
But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:
To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.
To know the pain of too much tenderness.
To be wounded by your own understanding of love;
And to bleed willingly and joyfully.
To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;
To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy;
To return home at eventide with gratitude;
And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.

an evening about tears for rejection ...

Heidelberg P1050837, originally uploaded by paulbavo.

this evening, we were invited for dinner at friends.
They have a problem: their grandchildren and their mother (our friends daughter) don't want to see them nor speak anymore to them.
They were really in tears.

I do believe they love them so much, and that the thought of their love being rejected is unbearable for them.

Why is it that we have so much love to give, and why do we have so little response sometimes? I guess it's true, that love is a blessing and a curse. Tonight I really saw how love can hurt ...

shop till you drop !

Nikon has unveiled the Coolpix P90 superzoom with 24x optical zoom. With 26mm - 624mm (35mm equiv.) zoom range this superzoom camera sports a 12.1 MP sensor, 3.0 inch tilting LCD and includes manual and auto features such as Scene Auto Selector, Smile Mode, Blink warning and P/A/S/M exposure modes. In addition, continuous shooting mode can deliver 45 images at 15 fps, with images being recorded before pressing the shutter button.

Guys, I'm shopping for a new camera !!! Not that my good old Lumix is worthless, it's still a very handy tool that fits in any pocket and that makes amazing pictures, but I'm hungry for some more sophistication :-) which I didn't find on the market till now: I don't want to buy the usual SLR (reflex-camera): although very nice, they all are too big and too bulky, and not convenient for a loose traveller like me.

Several brands are popping out now with a DSLR: digital single lense reflex camera: much smaller then the usual old SLR, and with lots of interesting yummies! The Nikon above is one of them, and there's also the Panasonic DMC G1 (soon to be G2). I can't wait to test them, and to make a choice! I can't promise that I will have made a decision by next trip (March/April), but surely in summer! Be prepared for some wild shooting when I'll have the new cam !!!!

The entrance of the Strasbourg Cathedral

The Door, originally uploaded by losvizzero.

Sunday! Church time :-) This picture is grabbed from a flickr.com page, it's a general overview of the entrance of the cathedral in Strasbourg, France. I'm searching for detailed pictures of that entrance decoration.
If you happen to have them, or you have time to search for them, do give me a buzz !!!!

I'll tell you lateron what I'm going to do with those detailed pix :-)
